But Ugly Girls is a hard book to recommend. If you think the grittiness of Netflix's Orange is the New Black is too much, Ugly Girls takes that several steps beyond gritty to sordid.
Hunter got her start in flash fiction — short stories of 1, words or less. In Ugly Girlsher first novel, Baby Girl and Perry are companions who skip high school, steal cars for joyrides and wreak havoc at the local Walmart, just because they can. Baby Girl has taken on the thug persona of her brother, Charles, who was left brain-damaged and childlike after a car accident. She has taken on his mannish swagger and shaved half of her hair, behavioral armor that hides her vulnerability and pain.
Perry lives in a trailer park with her mother, Myra, a fading beauty who works at the truck stop when she's not too drunk to show up.
She is married to Jim, a prison guard who is the only remotely sympathetic person in the book and the only parent who shows any remnant of responsibility. When Perry and Baby Girl are contacted online by a mysterious man named Jamey who claims to be a high school student, their fragile friendship is frayed to the breaking point.
Baby Girl is intrigued by Jamey, but pretty Perry, who could have any boy, and frequently does, is the object of his dark obsession. Their meeting in a stone quarry has tragic consequences. Ugly Girls resides in the land of Walmart, Denny's and trailer parks, drunkenness, child predators and prison guards. This isn't to say that Perry and Baby Girl's story doesn't deserve to be told. I'm just not sure many people will want to read it.
In this book, sex is not about love, but about need. Jamey's mother comes off like a predatory Jabba the Hut who coaxes her creepy son into applying Jergen's to her feet, putting the ugh into Ugly Girls. No wonder Jamey is so troubled.
Hunter's prose lands like a boxer's blow, sharp and stinging. But the unrelenting bleakness of this tale takes its toll on a reader. Hunter is a writer to watch out for, but Ugly Girls is as tough on the reader as life is for Baby Girl and Perry.
